Lakers Left a Legacy in the 2020 NBA Season

“This historic 2020 NBA championship belongs to the Los Angeles Lakers!”

2020 has been a whirlwind for anyone and everyone. A year where sports abruptly stopped, businesses were forced to shut down and people were ordered to stay home.

Before that, the sports world was shook to the core on January 26, 2020. The city of Los Angeles wept with the news of Lakers legend Kobe Bryant tragically passed away in a helicopter accident. He was taken from us far too early along with his daughter Gianna and 7 others. The Los Angeles Lakers organization and fans all over the world were left speechless and left with a gaping hole in their hearts.

The welcoming face of Kobe has graced buildings all across Los Angeles county, reminding us of the legacy he left. The Mamba Mentality has been in the back of the heads of Los Angeles fans, but most importantly it’s been at the forefront of the members of the Lakers organization.

It’s with that mentality that they did it. After over 90 days in the NBA bubble in Orlando, being away from family and friends for most of that time. Day in and day out, grinding that much closer to achieving the goal of bringing the trophy home to Los Angeles. They did it, The Los Angeles Lakers won the 17th NBA Championship in franchise history.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the rest of the Los Angeles Lakers left a legacy. Winning the championship in a year like no other. Bringing the joy and normalcy of sports into millions of homes while sacrificing the freedom of their life. The 2020 NBA championship means so much more to this organization than others. It’s for Kobe.

“This whole journey, being here in the bubble, without y’all’s strength and loyalty, it wouldn’t have been possible.” LeBron’s words ring true, but it’s easy to be loyal to a team that plays with so much heart and dedication. Many of us watching from home watched with smiles on our face. The frustrations from losses and mistakes that were made didn’t matter once we heard the sound of the final buzzer and saw the sight of confetti covering the court in Orlando.

This 17th NBA championship means more than just being the best team in the NBA. It’s overcoming the months when no one knew when sports would come back. It’s overcoming the heartbreak of losing a legend within the organization. It’s Jeanie Buss becoming the first female owner to win an NBA championship. It’s trying with the Boston Celtics organization for 17 championships, the most in the NBA.

The only thing that would have made that moment better would have been to see them win in person at Staples Center, the house that Kobe built. But it’s okay, the Larry O’Brien is coming back to Los Angeles, the banner is getting raised here, and the boys are getting their championship rings.

The city of Los Angeles, while still under social distancing protocols, celebrated. The Mamba Mentality will live on for many many years to come. The Lake Show left a legacy that Laker Nation will not soon forget.
