I keep seeing tweets saying that this year’s World Series isn’t real or should have an asterisk next to it… and I just keep thinking why would it? Why shouldn’t this year count as much as 2019…
2020 is a strange year to begin with, most of the world went into lock down by the month of March. Here in California we still haven’t gotten ungrounded, well mostly here in Los Angeles. If anything all of 2020 should have an asterisk on it.
All 30 teams were put into the same situation. 60 games, modified opponents, and minimal travel in comparison to other regular seasons. Which means just because the best team in baseball didn’t have a 100 win season like years past doesn’t mean it wasn’t a grueling season no matter what.
Players were forced to make the decision to play or opt out. Knowing that if they decided to play they are sacrificing aspects of their life for a minimum of 60 games. They knew they would be sacrificing family time, the freedom on days off, and the freedom to “stay home and stay safe.”
Risking the chance that they could catch Covid-19 from other players or coaches. Some teams made it through the season with zero positive test, others were not so lucky. Being in enclosed rooms and in close capacity with other people that don’t live in the same household is a risk for anyone, MLB players and personnel are not exempt.
Just because the season was shortened, it doesn’t mean that it should count any less. The first World Series was in 1903, that season there was only 140 games instead of what is our, now standard, 160 game season. We don’t discredit that WS or the 1903 Champion, the Boston Red Sox.
Bottom line is, professional sports championships shouldn’t be looked down upon this year in any aspect. Sports gave us something to look forward to everyday during this global pandemic that none of us have any control over. We’ve gotten the NHL Stanley Cup, the NBA Larry O’Brien Trophy, and we are about to see the WS Commissioner’s Trophy be hoisted. The two teams that are contenders are the top two teams in during the MLB season, and they’ve fought long and hard to win this trophy deep in the heart of texas. They’re ready and so are we.
