The last time the Los Angeles Kings took the ice was March 11th, 2020. They finally started heating up in the 2019-2020 season with their 7th win in a row that night. Little did we know that it would be just over 10 months until we saw Los Angeles royalty play again. Today is finally that day! It’s opening night, the Kings are hosting the Minnesota Wild at Staples Center and I couldn’t be happier that Kings hockey is back. It’s been long enough, 309 days to be exact.
Even though the Kings abruptly ended their 2019-2020 with a losing record, 29-41-6, I’m excited and optimistic for this season… and I really hope me saying that doesn’t come back to bite me in the ass. Look, I’m not asking for them to win the cup, I would just really like to see them finish the season with a winning record, give us fans some kind of hope for the future.
As much as I enjoyed bubble hockey, I had no dog in the the fight. I didn’t really have a team to cheer for, I did in fact cheer against a team… but this isn’t the time and place for that. I’m just glad that there ended up being a 2020 Stanley Cup champ and let’s be honest, Tampa deserved that one. I just wish their fans could have witnessed that accomplishment… being a Lakers and Dodgers fan, I know the feeling of not being able to watch your team raise that trophy in person.
Although it’s weird that opening night didn’t end up being in Hoctober for this season, I’m glad we get 56 games to cheer for our teams this year. Sports give some of us a sense of normalcy and I’m glad professional organizations have figured out how to make seasons as safe as possible for the players. Who knows when fans will be allowed back in our beloved barns, but until then I’ll be cheering for NHL royalty from my couch at home.
If I would have known the last time I was at a Kings game was my last time I would have spent a little bit more time on center ice. I can’t wait to hear that goal horn in person again. I can’t wait until I get to celebrate with fellow Kings fans at Staples Center again. Go Kings Go!
