On Saturday, Dodgers starting Pitcher, Dustin May exited the game after pitching 1.2 innings. He was visibly in pain after throwing a 94.3 fastball, which just so happens to be his slowest recorded fastball of the 2021 season. Fans sent out well wishes and hopeful thinking on twitter after his outing in Milwaukee, hoping for the best, the news was less than ideal after his MRI.
On Monday the Dodgers announced that May is going to undergo Tommy John surgery to repair tears in his UCL. There is only one word to describe what this means to the 2021 Dodgers, PAIN. May is the latest Dodgers pitcher to grace the IL this year, which has been a negative trend for this team thus far.
With the loss of May, the Dodgers have 4 healthy starters, Clayton Kershaw, Trevor Bauer, Walker Buehler and Julio Urias in their rotation. Tony Gonsolin is on the IL with the goal of starting his built up to be a starting pitcher soon, hopeful to be on the mound for the Dodgers by the end of the month. David Price was a key role for the Dodgers in the role of a relief pitcher, has been on the IL nursing a hamstring injury.
The Dodgers also have pitchers Caleb Ferguson, Tommy Kahnle, Brustar Graterol, Joe Kelly and Corey Knebel on the IL. Along with the long list of injured pitchers, They also have Zach McKinstry and Cody Bellinger on that injured list.
This news not only hurts the starting rotation, but it’s a bummer not seeing May on the mound for the rest of the year, because he’s a damn wizard when he takes the bump.
